People are online right now — say hi to one of them

01Before you tap

What is ChillHub?

ChillHub is live video chat in your browser. Tap Start and you are placed in a 1 on 1 video call with a real person who is online right now, often in another country. Guests begin without registering, and it runs in the browser you already have.

The second half of the name matters as much as the first. Some people write it as two words, Chill Hub. It is a hub where the only plan is to chill and talk to real people: relaxed, friendly, one conversation at a time. People come to meet someone new, to practise a language, or to make a friend they would never have met at home.

There are three ways to start a conversation here, and the table below sets them side by side. Leave it to chance, look at who is online and choose, or go back to someone you already know. The rest of this page follows one evening in order: before you tap, during a call, and after you hang up. If one good conversation is all you came for, the page for the 1 on 1 video call goes deeper on that alone.

Who is online right now?

The Who's online list shows who is on ChillHub at this moment. Tap a profile to say hello or start a call.

Random matching is one way in. The other is the Who's online list. You can view it by country, which is handy when you are curious about one place in particular or want to practise a language with someone who grew up speaking it.

Tap any face and their profile opens. From there you can follow them, write a message, or start a video call with that person. It turns chance into a choice: you can still leave things to chance, but you never have to.

03Why ChillHub

Why meet new people 1 on 1?

Because it is the easiest way to get to know someone. With two people, each of you gets to finish a sentence, ask a second question and hear the answer. You see a face and hear a voice, which tells you more than a page of profile text. No profile to polish first: it is a place for spontaneous, genuine conversation, the kind that starts with a hello and, when it goes well, has a second chapter.

Made for a good conversation, and a second one.

01

You see the person first

One tap and you are on your way to a face-to-face hello. You see the person and hear their voice before you know anything else about them.

02

Someone you can find again

Follow the people you enjoyed and they are saved. Tomorrow you can write to them or call them from their profile.

03

New faces from other countries

People come from all over the world, and the Who's online list can be viewed by country. Tonight's call might come from three time zones away.

04How it works

How does live video chat work here?

In three short steps, and none of them is a form: you tap, the site pairs you with one person who is online, and the live video call begins. See how it works for the full walk-through, including what happens after the call ends.

Tap, match, say hi.

  1. 01

    Tap once, no form

One tap on Start video chat. No signup wall for your first hello, and the browser only asks for your camera and microphone.

  2. 02

One person is picked for you

We pair you with someone who is online right now. It is 1 on 1 and it is random, so each live video call starts as a small surprise.

  3. 03

Say hi and see where it goes

Say hi and talk, by voice or in the text box. If you got on well, follow them so you can say hello again.

●During the call

What is it like to video call a stranger for the first time?

Slightly strange for ten seconds, then surprisingly normal. A video call with strangers skips the part where you study a profile and guess what somebody is like. You see a face, they see yours, and within a breath you both know whether a conversation is on.

On a live video call, a stranger is only a stranger until one of you mentions the weather, and then it is a chat like any other, just with a face attached. It gets easier each time, and when you meet someone you like you can follow them and talk again.

It goes best when the first line is plain. Try a place and a small detail: "Hi, I am calling from Ohio and it is raining. Where are you?" That gives the other person two easy things to answer. There are more lines like it, for every stage of a call, on the page about what to say on a 1 on 1 call.

If the call is not for you, you do not owe anyone a long goodbye. "Nice to meet you, have a good night" is a complete sentence. And if the camera makes you nervous, type first. The text box works during the call, so you can start with a written hello and let your voice catch up. Two people typing "hi" and laughing at how formal it looks is a perfectly good start.

05The experience

What can I do during a live video call?

Talk, type, or both. The picture fills the screen and the controls stay small, so the conversation has the room.

It feels less like an app, more like bumping into someone.

  • Talk face to face: they fill the screen and your own picture sits in a corner
  • Type alongside when words come easier, and typed messages can translate automatically
  • Not a fit? Say goodbye and look for another match; a new one is covered by a free match or by coins

Use the text box for a name that is hard to spell or a first hello if you are shy. It is the same box that lets two people with different languages understand each other.

●After you hang up

Can I talk to the same person again?

Yes, and it is the part that makes a good call worth having. A random match is a nice surprise once; meeting the same person twice by chance is unlikely. So when a conversation goes well, follow them. That one step is the difference between a pleasant evening and someone you know.

  1. Follow

Follow a person you enjoyed talking to and they are saved to the people you follow.

  2. Message

Open their profile and write a line. It is there for them when they next open the site.

  3. Call again

When you see they are online, start a video call from their profile.

This is the third way in from the table at the top of the page, and it can easily become the main one. You open the site, look at the people you follow, and say hello to someone whose name you already know. The guide to how to make friends online takes those steps one at a time.

●Across borders

Can I video chat with people from other countries?

Yes. People come from many countries, so a random match in your evening might be someone finishing breakfast on another continent. You can also open Who's online, view it by country and say hi to real people from other countries, 1 on 1.

A different language does not have to end the conversation. Typed messages can translate automatically, so a sentence you write in English can be read in the other person's language. Speak slowly, type the tricky words, and it works. There is a whole page on meeting people from other countries, with a table of who is awake when.

●Cost

Is live video chat on ChillHub free?

It is free to start. New people get free matches, and a match begins with free time; if you keep talking past it, the call continues on coins, and a notice appears in the call before that happens.

The page Is ChillHub free lays out where the free part ends, in plain words.

●Getting in

Do I need an account or a download?

Neither. A guest session is ready when the page loads, and ChillHub runs in the browser you already have, on a phone or a laptop.

If you want it one tap away, the ChillHub app page shows how to add it to your home screen, and how ChillHub works covers the rest of the flow.

Your next conversation starts here.

Someone is online right now, hoping the next call is you.

07FAQ

Good questions, honest answers

What is ChillHub?

ChillHub is a live video chat site that connects two people at a time. You tap Start, the site pairs you with someone who is online, and the two of you talk face to face in the browser. Some people write it Chill Hub; either way it is the same simple idea, a place to video chat and chill with someone new.

Is ChillHub chat by video or by text?

Both, with video first. ChillHub chat starts as a video call, and a text box sits beside the picture for the moments when typing is easier than talking. Typed messages can translate automatically, which helps when the two of you grew up with different languages.

How do I start a live video chat with strangers?

Tap Start video chat, let the browser use your camera and microphone, and wait for a match. A call is between you and one other person, so a live video chat with strangers means one stranger at a time.

Can I use live video chat with no registration?

Yes. Open the site, tap Start and you are matched. A guest session is created when the page loads, so your first call starts without a form, an email address or a password. Sort out an account later if you decide to keep one.

Does live video chat work online in a phone browser?

Yes. A current phone browser is all it takes. The call fills the screen with the other person and tucks your own picture into a corner. Wi-Fi gives the steadiest picture, and mobile data works too.

Is live video chat on ChillHub a room or a 1 on 1 call?

A 1 on 1 call: a call is between you and one other person. To start one, tap Start and you are paired with someone who is online, or open Who's online, pick a profile and say hello from there.

Will I video chat with real people?

Yes. You video chat with real people, and the camera makes that obvious within a second.

How do I video call a stranger without it being awkward?

Give the first line a job. Say your name, say where you are and ask one easy question. A video call to a stranger feels odd for about ten seconds, and it usually turns ordinary as soon as one of you laughs. If it stays flat, say thanks and goodbye.

Can I message someone before calling?

Yes. Open Who's online, tap a face to see the profile and write a message from there. It is a gentle way to say hello if a video call feels like a big first step.

What are the best apps to video call strangers?

The ones that get you talking to a real person and say plainly what they cost. Many want an install and an account first. ChillHub skips the install: it opens in the browser and can sit on your home screen. The ChillHub app page explains how.

Can I choose to talk to someone from the United States?

Not with random matching, which does not let you choose a country. What you can do is open Who's online, view the list by country, and call or message someone from their profile.

What happens when my free matches run out?

A new match then uses coins, unless a claim is ready in the Reward Center at the top of the match screen. The page Is ChillHub free? explains where the free part ends.
