1 on 1 video call: what to say, from hello to goodbye

A 1 on 1 video call with someone new goes through five stages. Here is what happens in each one, a line you can use, and what to do on ChillHub so a good call is not the last one.

How does a 1 on 1 video call go?

In five stages: the first words, finding a topic, getting going, wrapping up, and finding the person again. Each has a simple job, and a plain first line is all you need to begin.

01The short version

What is a 1 on 1 video call on ChillHub?

It is a live video call between you and one other person. They fill the screen, your own picture sits in a corner, and a text box runs beside the video for anything that is easier to type than to say. You can start one with the Start button, which pairs you with someone who is online, or from the profile of a person you picked yourself.

Getting connected takes a tap and a camera permission, and the steps are on how ChillHub works. This page is about the part that comes next, the part nobody explains: what to actually do once a face appears. A 1 on 1 call with someone new tends to pass through the same five stages, and each one has a job. The table gives the outline, and the sections below take them one at a time.

The five stages of a 1 on 1 call
StageWhat is going onA line that worksOn ChillHub
1. The first wordsYou both check picture and sound and decide whether to smile."Hi, I'm Sam. Can you hear me all right?"If they have not spoken yet, type a hello in the text box.
2. Finding a topicNames and places are used up and a pause arrives."What were you in the middle of before this?"Type any word that is hard to catch, so it can be read and translated.
3. Getting goingYou have found one thing in common and the call has its first joke."Show me. What does it look like from your window?"Use the camera: hold things up, turn it to the street.
4. Wrapping upOne of you has somewhere to be, or the talk has run its course."This was fun. I am going to head off now."End the call, or go to a new match once the next button is available.
5. Finding them againThe call is over and you would like another one."I will message you this weekend."Follow them, then write or call from their profile.

02Stage 1

What do you say in the first seconds of a 1 on 1 call?

Your name and a sound check. On a 1 on 1 video call that is the whole first line, and it works because it gives the other person something easy to answer. "Hi, I'm Sam. Can you hear me all right?" does three things: it tells them what to call you, it shows you are friendly, and it hands them a yes-or-no question while they settle.

Follow it with one fact about where you are. Not your address; a city and a detail. "I am in Leeds and it has rained all day." A place plus a detail gives them two threads to pull, and it is easy to pick one. If they answer with their own city, you already have the next question: what is it like there right now?

Sometimes the other person says nothing for a moment. They may be adjusting their sound, or they may be shy. Type "hi" in the text box. A written hello is easier to answer than a spoken one, and it often gets the first reply when a wave does not.

  • If you blank: say so. "I always forget how to start these." Plenty of people feel the same, and it usually gets a laugh.
  • If the picture is dark: mention it kindly and fix your own first. Facing a window or a lamp helps more than any setting.
  • If you feel watched: look at the lens for the hello, then let your eyes go back to the screen. Nobody holds eye contact with a camera for long.

03Stage 2

How do you find something to talk about with someone new?

Ask for a story, not a fact. "Where are you from?" has a one-word answer, and after three questions like it a 1v1 video chat feels like a form. "What were you in the middle of before this?" cannot be answered in one word. Neither can "What is the last thing you cooked?" or "What can you see from where you are sitting?"

Then listen for the detail and ask about that. If they say they were fixing a bike, ask whose bike. If they were cooking, ask who taught them the dish. The second question matters more than the first, because it shows you were paying attention to them and not just working down a list.

Offer something of your own in return. A one on one conversation where one side asks and the other answers wears thin. After they tell you about their evening, tell them one thing about yours. Trade at about the same size: a small detail for a small detail.

When a word will not land, because of an accent, a bad line or a second language, type it. Typed messages can translate automatically, so a place name or a dish written in the text box can be read on the other side in their language. The page on friends in other countries has more on talking across a language gap.

04Stage 3

What changes once the conversation gets going?

You stop needing questions. Somewhere after the first shared laugh, a 1 on 1 video call turns from an interview into company. Pauses stop feeling like a problem. You can let one sit for a breath, and the other person usually fills it with something better than what you were about to ask.

This is the stage where 1 on 1 video chat earns its place over text. Show things. Hold up the book on your desk, the mug you are drinking from, the cat that has just walked in. Ask to see their street, or the weather out of their window. Two people looking at the same object have something to talk about without trying.

It is also a good moment to learn something. Ask how to say "cheers" where they live, or what a normal breakfast is. People enjoy being the expert on their own life, and you come away with something you did not know before the call.

  • Use their name once or twice. It tells them you remembered it.
  • Follow their energy. If they are joking, joke. If they turn thoughtful, stay with it for a moment before you lighten things.
  • Keep the private things private. A first name and a city are plenty; the safety page lists what to hold back early on.

05Stage 4

How do you end a 1 on 1 call politely, or move on?

Say one kind thing and one clear thing. "This was fun. I am going to head off now" is complete. You do not need a reason, and inventing one usually sounds worse than giving none. If you enjoyed it, add what you liked: "I am going to think about that soup all week."

If the call was not a fit, the same sentence still works, minus the soup. "Nice to meet you, take care" is polite in every language. Not every 1 on 1 call clicks, and both people usually know within a few lines. Ending kindly is better for both of you than staying out of politeness.

You can end a call whenever you like. If you would rather meet someone else, go to a new match when the next button becomes available. Keep one thing in mind before you do: a new match is paid for with a free match, or with coins once those are gone, so a conversation that is going fairly well is worth a few more lines before you look for another.

A match begins with free time. If you keep talking past it, the call continues on coins, and a notice appears in the call first. Is ChillHub free? explains the free part and the coins page covers the rest.

06Stage 5

How do you find the same person again?

Follow them. A good 1 on 1 video call does not have to be the only one: a person you follow is saved to the list of people you follow, and that list is the way back. Without it you would be relying on a random match to bring the same person round twice.

From their profile there are two ways to pick the thread up. You can leave a message, which waits for them until they are next around; this suits different time zones and busy weeks. Or you can start a video call from the profile when you see they are online.

It helps to say which one you will do before you hang up. "I will message you on Sunday" turns a nice call into a small plan, and the other person knows the next move is yours. When you do write, mention something from the call: the bike, the soup, the cat. It shows you remember them and not only that you had a call.

This is also how one good 1v1 call becomes something longer. If that is what you are hoping for, the page on how to make friends online follows the steps from a first hello to a friend.

07Two ways in

Random match or pick someone who's online?

Both lead to the same kind of 1 on 1 call. A random match leaves it to chance, and the Who's online list lets you choose. They suit different moods, and the five stages above apply to either.

08Names

Is 1v1 the same as 1 on 1?

Yes. 1v1, 1 on 1 and one on one all mean the same thing: two people, one conversation. On ChillHub that is a live video call with a text box beside the picture. If you want it within reach on your phone, the ChillHub app page shows how to put the site on your home screen.

?FAQ

1 on 1 video call questions

Should I message first or call first?

Either works. A message from a profile suits a first contact with someone you picked from Who's online; a call suits the moment when you can see they are online and you feel like talking.

What does 1v1 mean?

It means one person with one other person. The phrase comes from games, where 1v1 is one player against another, but in a chat nobody is competing. It is simply a conversation for two.

Is a Chill Hub 1v1 chat by video or by text?

By video first, with text alongside. You see and hear each other, and you can talk, type, or do both in the same call.

Can I have a 1 on 1 call without an account?

Yes. A guest session is created when the page loads, so there is no registration before your first call. You can decide about an account later, once you have people you want to keep.

Can I choose who I talk to on a 1v1 video call?

With the Start button, no: it gives you a random 1 on 1 video chat with one person who is online, and it cannot be aimed at a country. To choose, open Who's online, look through the people there and start a call from a profile.

What if I run out of things to say on a 1 on 1 call?

Ask about something you can see. The room behind them, the mug in their hand, the weather out of their window. If the pause still feels long, say "I have run out of questions, your turn" and let them lead.

What if we do not share a language?

Speak slowly, use your hands and type the hard words. Typed messages can translate automatically. The translation applies to text, not to speech.

Is it rude to end a 1v1 call early?

No. A short, kind goodbye is better than a long call neither of you is enjoying. "Nice to meet you, take care" is enough.

Does a one on one video call work on a laptop?

Yes. It runs in a laptop browser just as it does on a phone. Allow the camera and microphone when the browser asks, and use headphones if the room echoes.

What does a 1 on 1 video call cost?

It is free to start. A match begins with free time, and if you keep talking past it the call continues on coins, with a notice in the call first. The page Is ChillHub free? has the details.
