What is ChillHub, briefly?

A live video chat site where you meet new people 1 on 1 in your browser, often from other countries, and follow the ones you would like to talk to again. Guests can begin without an account.

01The definition

What kind of site is chillhub.chat?

ChillHub is a live video chat site at chillhub.chat. It is a relaxed place to meet new people: you tap Start, you are matched with someone who is online, and you talk face to face without leaving the browser. Guests can begin without registering.

Our short description is "Live Video Chat & Chill". The first half says what it is. The second half says how it should feel: like an ordinary conversation with a friendly person, often from another country, that you can pick up again another day. Some people write the name as two words, Chill Hub; it is the same site either way.

02The main idea

Why is a call for two people?

Because that is how most people get to know each other. Think of the people you are close to. With nearly every one of them there was a moment when it was just the two of you talking, at a bus stop, in a kitchen at a party, on a long drive, and you came away knowing them. A call is between you and one other person so that the same thing can happen with someone you met five minutes ago.

Two people share a conversation evenly. There is room for each of you to tell a whole story and to hear one back. Shy people tend to say more when there is one listener, and talkative people tend to listen more. You also learn a name and remember it, which is where every friendship starts.

Video is the other half of the idea. A face tells you in a moment what a profile takes paragraphs to say: whether someone is warm, tired, funny, curious. You do not have to guess what a person is like from the photos they chose. You see them, they see you, and you both know quickly whether there is a conversation in it. The page on the 1 on 1 video call follows one call from the first hello to the goodbye.

03The name

Why is it called "chill"?

Because the mood we are aiming for is an easy one. You do not need a polished profile, a clever opening line or a reason for being here. "I felt like talking to someone" is reason enough.

Chill also describes how to treat the person on the other side. Say hello, be curious, be kind, and let them go gracefully when they want to leave. The community guidelines put that into rules, but the spirit of it fits in a line: be the sort of person you would be glad to be matched with.

And the "hub" is the other part. People arrive from many countries, meet in the middle and go home with a new name on their list. That is all a hub is.

04Trade-offs

What did we choose, and what does each choice cost?

Every product is a set of decisions, and each decision gives something up. These are the main ones behind ChillHub, with what you gain and what you lose. We would rather you knew both.

Video first, with typing beside it

You gain certainty about who you are talking to, and tone of voice. You lose the comfort of hiding behind text. The text box softens that: you can type a hello first, and typed messages can translate automatically.

Matching by chance, with a list for choosing

The Start button pairs you with someone who is online, so you meet people you would never have picked. The cost is that you cannot order a particular kind of person. When you want a say, the Who's online list can be viewed by country and every profile on it can be opened.

Guests welcome

You can try a call before deciding anything, because a guest session is created when the page loads. The cost is that a guest session lives in the browser where it began. Signing in is how you keep the people you follow.

A website, not a download

There is nothing to install and it works on the device you already have. In exchange, your browser will ask for camera and microphone permission, and you may want to add the site to your home screen yourself. The ChillHub app page explains how.

Free to start, then coins

You can find out what a call is like without paying. The cost is plain: it is not free without end. Live video is expensive to run, and coins are how the site pays for it. Is ChillHub free? says where the free part stops.

Follow, so a good call can have a sequel

Following someone gives you a way back to them: a message or another call from their profile. It takes one more tap than simply moving on, and it is the tap that turns a pleasant chat into someone you know.

The complete list of what you can do, and where each thing is found, is on the features page.

05A picture of it

What does a good evening on ChillHub look like?

It is easier to show than to define. Picture a weeknight. You open ChillHub on your phone while the kettle boils and tap Start. The first person is friendly but tired, and after a short chat you both say goodnight. The second is a nurse on her break who wants to know what snow is like. You talk, mostly about food, and before you hang up you follow her.

Two days later you see she is online, so you call from her profile and pick up where you left off. That is the whole product working as intended: two matches, one good conversation, one person you now know a little.

Not every evening goes like that. Some nights you have one short chat and close the tab, and that is fine too. The aim is only that when a conversation is good, you can have it again.

06The people

Who is ChillHub for?

For people who would like some company and are happy for it to come from anywhere. That includes someone working from home who misses small talk, a student practising a language, a night-shift worker awake when their own town is asleep, a traveller who is homesick for conversation, and anyone curious about how people live elsewhere.

You do not have to be outgoing to fit in. People who find a camera awkward can open the Who's online list first, see who is around, and send a typed message before any call. People who love to talk can tap Start and take whoever comes. Both are using the site as intended, and plenty of them switch between the two depending on the kind of day they have had.

It suits people who want to make friends online and people who simply want a good chat tonight. What it asks of everyone is the same: be kind, be yourself, and do not use the site for selling things or for pressuring anyone.

07Money and rules

How is ChillHub paid for, and what are the rules?

It is paid for by coins. The site is free to start, and what comes after is explained once and in full on Is ChillHub free? and the coins page, so it is not repeated here.

The rules are public. The community guidelines say what is welcome on a call, the terms of service set the conditions for using the site, and the privacy policy explains what data is handled and how to have it removed. For the practical side of staying comfortable on a call, read the safety page.

08Contact

How do I reach ChillHub?

By email, at [email protected]. It is the only contact address, and it takes everything: trouble with a call, a question about coins, a report that needs more words than a button allows, a request about your data, and business or press enquiries.

The contact page lists what to put in your message for each kind of problem, and the help center has fixes for the common technical ones, such as a camera that will not switch on. If you are new and only want to know what happens when you tap Start, how ChillHub works is the shortest route.

It is a website that can behave like an app. It runs in the browser on a phone, a tablet or a laptop, and you can add it to your home screen if you want an icon.

Where are the people on ChillHub from?

From many countries. The Who's online list can be viewed by country, so you can see who is around when you visit.
